Stop the Bleed courses train the public to save lives through three basic actions to stop life-threatening bleeding following everyday emergencies and man-made and natural disasters.

The course is split between a presentation and hands-on "skill stations."  This is a basic-level class intended for general audiences.

You will learn:

  • Situational Safety: Ensuring the scene is safe for you to help so you don't become a second victim.
  • How to Identify Critical Wounds: Distinguishing between a minor cut and a life-threatening arterial bleed.
  • Pressure and Packing:  The first steps in a critical bleeding situation that requires no specialized equipment.
  • Proper Tourniquet Application: Using the "Pull, Twist, Clip" method:
    • Pull the strap as tight as possible.
    • Twist the windlass (rod) until the bleeding stops (this is very painful for the victim, and instructors emphasize that you must not stop just because they are in pain).
    • Clip the rod in place and note the time of application.
  • Challenging Areas: Learning how to "pack to the bone" for wounds in "junctional" areas where a tourniquet won't work, such as the neck, shoulder, or groin.
